Origin of Name:

Established in 1884 and named for Saint Stephen, a saint in the Roman Catholic Church by Reverend John Jutz, SJ, a Jesuit missionary. The mission was located at what was once a camping place of Arapaho Indians and known to them as “Camp of Black Coal.”  Black Coal was the Chief at the time the mission was established.
