Sapphire Pool, which boils every 12 minutes, is an excellent example of an intermediate stage between a geyser and a hot spring. The water boils violently and overflows, but no jet of water is hurled into the air. Between violent periods is an interval of calm, when the deep pool of blue, translucent water lies still.
