Origin of Name:
Shoshone Basin derives its name from the Shoshone tribe of Indians. These were an off-shoot of the Snakes, and tradition says that the Shoshone were followers of an ancient chief who nearly 350 years ago led his people into this basin. The Shoshone were often referred to as sheep eaters since they subsisted on the big horn sheep in the area. They were a very timid, inoffensive tribe, and much despised by the war like tribes. The tribe, however, almost reached the point of extinction. The men commenced marrying into the Snake tribe and becoming affiliated with the tribe. The sheep eaters passed out of existence and only the name of Shoshone was retained by a branch of the Snakes.
