Origin of Name:

First called Cottonwood, and later renamed for Senator Reed Smoot of Utah. Smoot is a small town located in Star Valley.

This settlement was first known as Cottonwood. It was organized into a ward in 1889. Some years later the name was changed to Belview. In about 1900 the name of the ward was changed to Smoot.

A farmer's village named after Sen. Reed Smoot of Utah. The southern end of Smoot is known as Forest Dell.

History:

Smoot Post Office was established on March 4, 1901 in Uinta County prior to the formation of Lincoln County. Moses S. Moffett was the first postmaster.
