Origin of Name:

The highway here enters the section where the high hills pinch in and the Wind River Canyon begins a cleft through the Owl Creek Range, the mountain on the west side of the canyon being known locally as Stagner Mountain. Named after Speed Stagner, a Missourian, who was married to an Indian woman and adopted into the Shoshone tribe by Chief Washakie.
