Cattlemen of Texas, learning of the great open ranges to the north, began trailing their herds up from the south, and the Texas drives were soon a spectacular feature of the cattle industry. Many buyers invested in thousands of head of Texas longhorns, and drove them up
the trail to their Wyoming ranches. In 1884 it was estimated that 800,000 head of cattle were moved north from Texas over the trail. The Texas Trail, or Long Trail, became second only to the Oregon Trail in point of adventure, tragedy, and romance.
