First known as Glencoe. Named by the McFarlane and Baxter families for a town in their native Scotland. On May 8, 1891 a post office was established. Since there was already a Glencoe, Wyoming post office, the town was named Thayne for the people who owned the log cabin where the post office was located.. The name of the town, as far as the church was concerned, was not changed until the early 1900's.
