Origin of Name:

Named by William Taylor, merchant of Rock Creek from some graves found there which resembled those that were made by the Toltec Indians. Toltec Post Office was established a good many years ago. It had  bi-weekly mail at first. Rock Creek town became one of the biggest shipping points in the state when a mail route was opened between it and Toltec. Frank Newell was the first contractor. In 1899 the post office was moved to the Bar M Ranch with L. Laughlin, manager for the Toltec livestock company, becoming postmaster and Mrs. Rogers, deputy.

History:

Toltec Post Office was established on January 7, 1891 with Albert H. Bell as the first postmaster. It was discontinued on September 30, 1933. Its mail was then handled at the Garrett Post Office.
