Origin of Name:

Named for John Upton, who was a member of the James Stuart mining expedition of 1864. Upton has a bentonite plant and stockyards. Once called “IronTown,” it is now a ranching center.

Farther up the track is Upton, named for A. Z. Upton who had played an important part in the town's development. Before its incorporation in 1909, Upton was known as Merina, and before Merino, as Iron City.

History:

Upton Post Office was established as Merino Post Office on September 25, 1890. Its name was changed to Upton Post Office on April 6, 1901. Jay H. Perry was the postmaster.

Prosperous and growing town in Weston County, on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railway, 28 miles west of Newcastle. Principal industries are live stock, farming and wool growing. Situated at the edge of the Black Hills. Has an annual rainfall of 22 inches. Good church and school privileges.

A leading and prosperous town in Weston County, 24 miles northwest of Newcastle, the county seat, on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railway, and the Black and Yellow Trail, situated at the edge of the Black Hills. Is the supply center for a large area surrounding. Live stock, farming, wool growing and oil well developing are the principal industries. Has a good rainfall. Ten miles distant are the sensational Osage Oil Fields, 8 miles to the Thornton Fields and adjacent to the town is the Upton Dome Field, all tributary to Upton. Good churches, schools, up-to-date business houses and progressive business men. Population 505. Altitude 4,242 feet.
