On August 2, 1867, Red Cloud and his band of 3,000 warriors attacked a detachment of 25 soldiers, two officers and five civilians under the command of Captain Powell at an improvised corral six miles west of Fort Phil Kearney. The corral was formed by 14 wagon boxes belonging to contractors who were furnishing logs and wood for the fort. Between 300 and 1,000 Indians were killed and only four soldiers died after more than six hours of battle.
