Origin of Name:

A point of scenic interest in the southern Big Horn Basin is Washakie Needles, a part of the Owl Creek range in western Hot Springs County, located about 50 miles west of Thermopolis. Owl Creek heads in the vicinity of these peaks. The Washakie Needles was named by Captain William A. Jones of the Army Corps of Engineers.

This peak, to which I have given the name of the "Washakee Needles," is a terrible crag. Its appearance from the valley of Owl Creek, above our camp, is simply frightful, sheer precipices of whitish lamellar granite rising up from the valley fully 2,500 feet high.
