This was an important Indian route and was used by the Shoshone under Chief Washakie, after whom the pass was named. Washakie was chief of the Eastern Shoshone for many years. The meaning of the name Washakie is given by the Handbook of American Indians as "shoots [the buffalo] running," but the other renderings are also advanced, such as “Shoots-on-the-fly,” “Sure-shot,” and “Gambler’s Gourd.” This last is generally accepted, and is believed to be derived from “wus-sik-he,” a “Rawhide.”
